NEW7WONDERS TÜRKİYE
A national heritage recognition platform built for global participation.
A global cultural participation platform designed to place Türkiye’s archaeological and
heritage sites into worldwide public consciousness through international voting, storytelling, media engagement, and large-scale public events.
Rationale
Why this project exists.
TÜRKİYE occupies an extraordinary position in global archaeology. Over 400 active excavation and research sites operate concurrently across the country — placing Türkiye among the world’s most significant centres of archaeological knowledge production. From Göbeklitepe to Çatalhöyük, Turkish-led discoveries continue to reshape the international understanding of early settlement, ritual practice, and the conceptual boundaries of human history itself.
The strength of Türkiye’s archaeological contribution sits on solid scientific ground. The challenge is something different: the speed at which scientifically validated archaeological knowledge translates into global cultural recognisability. International heritage governance systems — UNESCO, ICOM, ICOMOS — are designed to operate with deliberate caution.
Public symbolic recognition emerges as a secondary stage, often unfolding over decades.
This produces a structural recognition gap. TÜRKİYE‘s scientific archaeological output is world leading; its global symbolic recognisability moves at a slower pace. The gap matters because recognisability shapes cultural diplomacy, academic engagement, philanthropic interest, and long-term visitor demand.
NEW7WONDERS TÜRKİYE is positioned to address that gap.
It operates as a complementary recognition layer — sitting on top of scientific legitimacy, in alignment with the institutions that produce it.
Its function is participatory cultural recognition: building a public process through which TÜRKİYE‘s archaeological contributions are recognised at scale.

THE FIVE WS & HOW
WHO
Originated and structured by Deniz Kuzgunu as a proposed Türkiye edition, designed to align with the New7Wonders Foundation framework. Its formal status follows the licence agreement with the Foundation, for which Deniz Kuzgunu is seeking partners. Designed to operate in alignment with TÜRKİYE‘s archaeological institutions and the international heritage governance ecosystem.
WHAT
Conceived as the Türkiye edition of the New7Wonders platform – designed to elevate the country’s most extraordinary archaeological and cultural heritage sites through a global public voting process and an international visibility campaign.
Structured as a multi-layered cultural platform spanning nominations, public participation, international communications, media visibility, cultural programming, and long-term symbolic positioning around Türkiye’s civilisational heritage.
WHERE
TÜRKİYE, with international participation. The candidate sites are drawn from TÜRKİYE‘s archaeological geography. The recognition process is global in reach.
WHEN
In development. Implementation phased over a multi-year horizon, with the recognition campaign, the announcement, and the post-announcement programme operating across distinct stages.
WHY
World-leading archaeology deserves world-level recognition.
New7Wonders Türkiye is designed to strengthen Türkiye’s global cultural visibility, attract higher-value cultural tourism, and position the country more powerfully within the world’s civilisational imagination.
HOW
Through cultural positioning, strong visual identity, retail visibility, hospitality integration, licensing partnerships, and high-frequency everyday usage.
Designed to move through beaches, parks, ferry journeys, festivals, neighbourhood gatherings, and social spaces where summer life becomes publicly visible.
Strategic context
Recognition as cultural infrastructure.
International tourism economics treats destination preference as a function of recognisability, symbolic value, and mental accessibility. People travel to places they have heard of, that occupy a position in the cultural imagination. For archaeological geographies, this means scientific significance and visitor demand operate on different timelines and through different mechanisms.
TÜRKİYE‘s archaeological depth is well-documented in the academic literature; its position in the global cultural imagination is still being built. The economic argument for closing this gap is straightforward: in a tourism economy that already serves tens of millions of international visitors per year, marginal increases in recognition produce significant absolute increases in revenue. A 0.5% lift generates hundreds of millions of dollars in incremental annual tourism income; a 1% lift produces sums approaching half a billion; a 2% lift produces effects measured in billions.
Beyond direct visitor revenue, recognition generates compounding indirect effects. Academic partnerships deepen; international philanthropic and research funding flows expand; cultural diplomacy capacity strengthens; private sector investment in heritage-adjacent sectors grows.
The project sits in deliberate alignment with the international heritage governance ecosystem.
UNESCO, ICOM, and ICOMOS remain the scientific spine of the global heritage architecture. NEW7WONDERS TÜRKİYE operates as a complementary participatory layer — strengthening the institutional foundations on which it stands.
